Greetings from Martin Smith
Hartley Wintney Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

What a fortnight of sport we have seen! Saturday saw England wrap up victory in the first Ashes test at Cardiff with a day to spare. Roger Federer produced some sublime tennis to beat Andy Murray in the semi-final at Wimbledon on Friday, but came up short in Sunday's final against Novak Djokovic. Then two young American golfers, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth came out on top either side of the pond heading into this week's Open.

There are certainly some names to look out for in this year's Championship now that McIlroy is out. Jordan Spieth has to be a hot favourite with his scintillating form, however we have made a few picks ourselves in the Pro Shop.

I think it could be Rickie Fowler as last week's win should have him prepared for the Scottish links conditions perfectly. I also think Marc Warren could be a good outside bet. Sam is putting his money on Charl Schwartzel and Eddie Pepperall, Tom likes the look of Dustin Johnson and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

It is sure to be fantastic viewing over the four days and I for one can not wait for it to start.

Seve Trophy

The Seve Trophy was played on Sunday, 12 July in memory of the golfing legend Seve Ballesteros. The competition helped to raise funds for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation.

There was a gross and nett competition. First place in the gross competition was Tom Winder with a very solid round of  75 to win the trophy. Three shots further back in second was Jamie Mullin on 78. Third place went to Ian Fitzpatrick on 79.

The winner of the nett competition was the in form Robert Bosworth with a nett 69. One shot back was the winner of the gross Tom Winder on nett 70. There was a count back needed for third place and it went to the runner in the gross competition, Jamie Mullin with a nett 71.

Huntsdale Cup

Saturday was a pairs competition, where the format was Patsomes. The way this competition works is that holes 1-6 are played as foursomes, holes 7-12 are played as greensomes and holes 13-18 better ball.

This competition needs skill but also some tactics! The pair that got their tactics and golf together were Roly Newman and Robert Bosworth on nett 64.5, winning by 3.5 shots. A count back was needed for runners up spot. Dennis Smith and Phil Reid beat playing partners Ian Smith and Keith Morris, who both scored nett 68.

Seniors Stableford

Congratulations to Brian Ratcliffe on winning the July Seniors stableford. Brian played some faultless golf to blow away the filed with a superb 45 points to win by a margin of five points.

Brian has now been cut by 3.2 shots. Second place went to Simon Williams with a very good score of forty points.

Back in third was Dennis Smith on thirty nine points.

Ladies Competition Results

The Stoneham team had a great match at home against Meon Valley. Two matches went to the nineteenth and twentieth holes with the end result a win by four matches to three. Even the cows came over on the 15th hole to cheer our ladies on. The group competition is really tight and our team has just two matches to go - away to Liphook and North Hants so will be looking to get good results in both.

Well done to Cheryl Scott, Chris Warman Di Child, Wendy Doel, Linda Turner, Karin Robey and Julie Rumsby.

Over 40 Hartley Wintney ladies enjoyed a day out playing at Chobham golf course. A good time was had by everyone. We all kept coming across yet another pond to go over or get around! The team of Nicky Harden, Denise Duce and Linda Newton led the scores, with Nicky Guy, Hope Hooper and Trisha Sheppard coming second.

Well done to Christine Campbell and Sue Rockhill for organising the day.

Whilst our Ladies were away enjoying themselves at Chobham, Maggie Tomkins hosted the Chobham Ladies at Hartley Wintney. Thank you to Maggie.

At the weekend, a team of ladies and gents played a friendly match at Basingstoke. Sadly we lost by five games to two. It was the first mixed match against another club for Tony Wise (Men's Vice Captain). Tony and Julie will have to regain the Silver Plate next year.

In the Ladies Weekend Medal competition it was tight at the top. Cydney Morgan won with a nett seventy three and Avril Haynes was second with nett seventy four. Good scoring ladies.

Congratulations to Deirdre Randall who won the Scratch in the Hampshire Golf Seniors Championship at Brokenhurst Manor.

Glenmuir Saltire competition

Last chance to win…

… the Zip Neck Saltire sweater in 100% lambswool as worn by the victorious European Ryder Cup team at Gleneagles, a quality garment that’s well worth winning - but, be quick!
