Much of the golf at Wentworth last week was played to a very high standard. Byeong Hun An blew the field away whilst Rory struggled with fatigue. I have no doubt that the break over the weekend will do Rory the world of good for this week's European Tour event at Royal County Down GC.
I don't think I have seen so many hole in ones at European Tour events in a month let alone at just the one venue! Read on to see it wasn't just the Professionals making a name for themselves with hole in ones.
The redesigned second hole opens up this weekend and I am sure everyone is looking forward to the new challenge that this hole will provide. I will be one of a group of four players, Captain
Philip Welch, Lady Captain
Jan Newman and green's Chairman
Alun Lamerton who have the honour of opening the new hole at 9.45am, before the shotgun start competition begins. The first team to play the hole in competitive play will be
Jeremy Tebbs,
Richard Thompson,
Dennis Hill and
Bruce Jamieson. Good luck to them and all the other competitors on the day.
Time is fast running out if you would like to enter this year's Pro-Am. It is a day not to be missed and a chance to win some fantastic prizes. Our Pro-Am is the longest running Pro-Am in Hampshire and one that the local Professionals really enjoy. The event takes place on Sunday 14th June so if you have not entered but would still like to contact us in the Pro Shop.
May Monthly Medal
On Saturday the men competed in drawn Monthly Medal. The weather was excellent and ready for some good scoring. Many of the players took the chance to record some great scores.
One player that took full advantage of the conditions was new member, joining the club at the start of year, Paul de Noronha. Paul scored an excellent nett 65 to win the EGU Gold Medal by two clear shots.
In second place was Barry Stewart on nett 67. Barry must have been watching the golf over the weekend as he followed in the footsteps of Miguel Angel Jimenez and a few others with a hole in one on the ninth hole with his trusty seven wood. Third place went to Luke Hicks on nett 68.
Men's Gales Hockely over 50's
The over fifty year olds battled to a convincing six matches to three victory over Southsea, however the win was described by captain Philip Welch as a very tough match.
The wins came from Phil Welch, Alun Lamerton, Bob Collins, John Comfort, Adrian Squibb and Kevin Wise. Well done team and good luck to you all in the next round where Brokernhurst GC or South Winchester GC await you.
Seniors Stableford
The seniors competed in the Seniors Stableford last Friday. John Gair was the best of players scoring an excellent 41 points to win by four points. Second place needed a countback to separate the two players on 37 points. Ed Joinson had the best back nine to finish second. Adrian Humphries came third also on 37 points.
Hayling Trophy
What an exciting finish to our Hayling Trophy competition. Last Monday was our final Hayling Trophy match at home against Gosport. Four teams came in and the score was two all. We won the last game on the 22nd hole for a home win of three matches to two and a final score of four games won and four games lost. Thank you to Paula Spurrier for her excellent leadership and organisation.
Well done to all the ladies who played in the group of five clubs - Paula Spurrier, Catherine Davies, Velda Hodges, Bett Howard, Vanessa Kelly, Lynda Lamerton, Majorie Light, Jan Mitchell, Emma Pearce-Molland, Barbara Simms and Marie Walker. Thank you to all the caddies as well.
LGU Coronation Foursomes
The LGU Coronation Foursomes was won by Deirdre Randall & Wendy Doel with thirty six points, with runners up Linda Turner & Hope Hooper. Fingers crossed the best 100 regional scores qualify to play in an area final. More news when known.
Stoneham Cup
The Stoneham team won their home match against Freshwater Bay on Thursday. The result was five, two. So far that's two matches won and one loss. Thank you to everyone who lent their trollies for the visiting team to borrow. Cheryl Scott, Nicky Harden, Linda Turner, Di Child, Wendy Doel, Julie Rumsby, Jan Newman.
Weekend Stableford
The Weekend Stableford was won by Janice Vince with 34 points, on countback from Jenni Ferguson. Well done to both ladies.
