Mens Club Championship
The Mens Club Championship was played last weekend. Seventy one players entered the event and as always it turned out to be a very interesting and keenly contested two days of golf. The lowest handicap players started the event off early on Saturday morning with light rain in the air and quite a breeze blowing. It would prove to be a day of quite tricky conditions. Ian Callaway and Lee Poulter coped best on the day with great rounds of 73 gross to lead the field in the scratch event. Lee was also the leader in the nett event having had one of his best rounds ever, a nett 64. Day two dawned and the weather was much kinder. The leaders took to the course last with the top nine players even accompanied by a scorer to give live scoring on the last nine holes back to the clubhouse, which really added to the event. As the scores came in it was starting to look more and more like Ian Callaway was in control of the scratch event. Ian followed his first round seventy three with another very solid round of 74 for a 147 total and a convincing six shot victory over Mark Chandler and Tom Winder, who both scored 153 over the two days.
The Club Championship nett competition proved to be a very close affair over the two days. First round leader Lee Poulter could not repeat his form of the first day and faded out of contention. Vice Captain Phil Welch had made a charge and was leading in the clubhouse for a while on nett 139 for the two rounds, but it was second to last group out that would provide first and second place. Roly Newman who scored nett 65 on day one held a two shot lead over Kevin Pitcher as they made their way to the 36 hole. Unfortunately Roly found some trouble down the last hole to give Kevin his chance which he certainly took as he holed from ten feet for par and a two shot winning total of 136 nett over the two days.
