Greetings from Martin Smith
Hartley Wintney Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

We have a big weekend ahead in the Hartley Wintney Golf Club calender as seventy one players contest the Men's Club Championship. As always it is difficult to pick the winner of the scratch event. Looking down the draw there are a few past champions that will know what it takes to win over the two days and they certainly cannot be written off. Who knows, maybe it will be a new name that will go on the trophy this year. Whatever happens I for one will be watching with much interest on Sunday afternoon.

There is also a nett competition running at the same time, which will give everyone who enters a real chance over the two days. With the course in great condition I am expecting some low scores as in the Pro Am this year. We would like to wish all the competitors the best of luck over the two days.

Coronation Cup

The Coronation Cup played over last weekend through up some testing weather over the two days especially on Saturday afternoon with heavy thunderstorms in the area. The competition still attracted a large entry of 122 players. Congratulations to James Woodland on scoring a winning round of 42 points.

James score was helped with his excellent play on the par three holes, James had three birdie twos in his round which also gave him a very healthy £27.75 in the twos sweep.

Runner up position went to Jamie Mullen with 41 points, finishing three points clear of Stephen Key in third place who scored thirty eight points.

June Midweek Medal

The June Midweek Medal was played on Tuesday 24th. June. Once again the midweek competition attracted a good entry with 36 players taking part. Vice Captain Phil Welch proved to be the man in form as he scored nett 67 to win the competition. Second place went to Laurence Welch, just two shots further back on nett 69. You could say it was a good day for the Welch!!

Mixed Invitation

The sunny conditions returned for the Mixed Invitation played on Sunday 29th June. Three pairs headed the field all scoring forty points and countback was needed to separate them. First place was awarded to Vanessa Kelly and her partner Howard Somerville (Hoebridge) Runner up prize went to Niki Orchard and ex member Richard Worrall (Breadsall Priory). Steve Randall and Alison Hall (Tylney Park) had to settle for third place. The Ladies and Gents nearest the pin prizes were won by the husband and wife pairing of John and Lynda Walker.

Ladies Churchill Cup

The Ladies section played their thirty six hole Churchill Cup over two rounds on Wednesday 18th June and Wednesday 25th June. Cheryl Scott kept up her consistant run of form with rounds of nett 68 and nett 77 for a two round total of 145 and a four shot winning margin. Runner up spot was taken by Ladies Vice Captain Jan Newman with a score of 149. Third place went to Linda Turner scoring 152.

Hampshire County Ladies Seniors Championship

Congratulations to Deirdre Randall on recently winning the Hampshire Ladies Seniors Championships at Hayling Island Golf Club. Deirdre mastered the windy conditions to not only win the scratch prize, Deirdre also went on to win the nett prize as well. What a great double!!

Titleist Vokey SM5 wedges

From deep greenside rough, use your bunker technique. Move the ball forward in your stance, open the face and keep your torso rotating to the finish. The new grooves in Titleist’s Vokey SM5 wedges will help too; tests show they increase backspin by up to 500rpm from long grass.

Take advantage of our expertise

It’s easy to trial a friend’s driver when your form with the woods dips. And whilst you might stumble across better results, long term it’s not the answer. With our expertise we can determine the proper loft and shaft flex that will suit your swing and, ultimately, save you shots.
