Thought of the week

Goodbye to 'The King'

This week golf lost a legend; Arnold Palmer golf's first million dollar player passed away aged 87. It is so easy these days to use the word "Legend" when referring to people who have been at the top of their profession, but make no mistake "Arnie" was a legend in the true sense of the word.

The cavalier way he played his golf, often playing from places only fit for a JCB, warmed him to the huge galleries that used to follow him and earned them the name "Arnie's Army". Arnie brought much to the game, his charisma, his film star like looks, his sportsmanship, but above all he was a gentleman.

Tributes have poured in, from players past and present, as well as from the US President.

Jack Nicklaus said: "He was more than a golfer or even great golfer. He was an icon. Arnold was someone who was a pioneer in his sport. He was the king of our sport and always will be."

Rest in Peace Arnie.

The Ryder Cup

At last the eagerly awaited 2016 Ryder Cup is almost here, let's hope it is played in the right spirit, not only by the players but the spectators as well.

With most of the players playing all over the world these days Europe's team are well known to the American golfing public, let us hope the etiquette of the game is respected and adhered to.

It was great to see Rory McIlroy returning to form at the weekend and looking like he is enjoying being back on the golf course.

Winning the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup bonus of a cool $10 million dollars, especially after coming so close in 2012 and 2014, can only breed confidence in the European camp. Come on Europe bring the Ryder Cup back home!

The wait is over

Shortly after Jamie Donaldson hit his 9-iron to 3 feet at the 15th two years ago at Gleneagles, Keegan Bradley removed his cap and conceded. The victory was Team Europe's third successful Ryder Cup title. Will Hazeltine be number four in a row?

The wait is just about over with the action getting underway in Minnesota on Friday. You wouldn't have needed us to remind you, but with the tension building we wanted to do so anyway!

We considered opening a new poll: who will win, Europe or America? However, we know who you'll be cheering for.

For our American readers, we wish you good luck. Putting biased opinion to one side, on paper this looks like it will be a very competitive encounter. Much will depend on how the rookies perform and whether the home crowd can help wrestle the Ryder Cup back across the pond. Stand by for plenty of "Get in the hole" shouts and, dare we say, a few more chants of that nature.

Enjoy the action wherever you watch it. If you're lucky enough to be making the trip to the US, then we look forward a tale or two upon your return. We also hope events in America this week will encourage you to get out and play. The clocks haven't changed just yet and there's plenty of golf still to be played this autumn.

Competition news

September 9 Hole Stableford

Four players had to be separated by countback in September's 9 Hole Stableford when the top four all shot 17 points. Because of the size of the field it was only the top two that would benefit from the sweep, and top of the pile in first place was Adam Allerhand with Lee Poulter taking the runners-up spot.

September Monthly Medal

Forty Eight players took part in the September Monthly Medal at the weekend with Les Greatrix leading the way to overall first place and winner of Division 1. Les shot an impressive net 68 which was all the more impressive when you consider the CSS was 74.

In second place was Division 2 winner Marcus Lillington who was a shot behind with a net 69. Third place went to Dave Bartlett with a net 71, Dave also had the lowest gross score shooting 74.

Senior's Niblick

Dennis Smith was the clear winner in the over 60's Seniors Niblick played over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Dennis shot 36 points two ahead of second placed Keith Morris (second sweep) who edged out Stephen Lines on countback, both players scored 34 points. CSS 71 (36 Stableford Points).

The Brian Powell Autumn Mixed Cup

The Brian Powell Autumn Mixed Cup at the weekend saw the top fours pairs scoring 40 points and over.

Runners up were Sue and Keith Rockhill with 43 points and the winners with 45 points were Deirdre and Steve Randall.

Ladies news

The ladies played the Daily Mail Foursomes last week and the pairing of Deirdre Randall and Cheryl Scott proved to be worthy winners who will represent Hartley Wintney GC in the matchplay knockout rounds next year.

Winners: Deirdre Randall and Cheryl Scott with Net 74
Runners Up: Di Child and Bett Howard with Net 74 (beaten on c/b over the last 9).
