Greetings from Martin Smith
Hartley Wintney Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

The 2014 Captain / Pro matches have got under way in the last couple of weeks and as in previous years the opposition have defiantly been up for the challenge. Our first match of the season was played against last yea’s champion pairing of Tony Peaty and Richard Lodde. This year’s match ended in a reversal of last year’s result as we went on to win by four holes. Our next match against Kevin Pigney and Lee Poulter proved to be a really close affair as there was never more than one hole in it. Standing on the last tee the match was all square. As always the eighteenth bared its teeth playing in to a strong wind. It proved to be no problem for Jamie and Kevin as they both made three nett two. Jamie holed his pitch from behind the green and Kevin holed a thirty foot putt for the half. What a great finish to keenly contested match.

Captain's day winnersCaptain’s Day proved to be very challenging in extremely windy conditions. The team that coped best in the wind with a score of 62.8 and to win by one clear shot was Brian Tedder, Bob Collins, the in form Kevin Pitcher and last minute replacement Derek Graves.

Second and third was very tight with 0.1 between their scores. David Judge, Paul Shannon, David Carrod and Ron Watt were runners up on 63.8. Third place was taken by Stuart Tester, Steve Doyle, Tong Wardle, and Ray Pygott.

A very enjoyable day and a great amount of money raised for Jamie’s chosen charity, well done to all the competitors.

Ladies Pro Day

Although the weather may not have been on top form with blustery showers in the air and only the odd glimpse of Spring sunshine it did not stop some of the teams in the Ladies Pro day performing very well. Congratulations to the winning team on the day of Cheryl Scott, Julia Johnson and Pat Stow with an excellent score of seventy four points. The runner’s up prize was won by the team of Christine Curtis, Wendy Pattison and Hazel Williams scoring sixty seven points after countback. Nearest the pin prize was won by Anne Smyth. It was great to see so many Ladies playing on the day, thank you for your support.

Churchill Cup

After 36 holes of medal, the draw for the matchplay knockout matches has been completed. Well played to all the qualifiers.

  • Jim Hayes v James Crawford
  • Les Greatrix v John Whiteway
  • Kevin Pigney v Mike Robey
  • Peter Goddard v Bradley Walsh.

Mixed Drawn Four Ball Better Ball

On Bank Holiday Monday a mixed drawn four ball better ball competition was played. Mike Flint and Linda Turner were the pair that were triumphant with a fantastic score of forty points. They pipped Cheyrl Scott and Ray Cullen by one shot back. A count back was needed for third place on thirty eight points with Keith Rockhill and Chris Warman coming out on top.

Save yourself time and money, go lithium!

Sure, a lithium trolley battery may cost a little more than its lead acid alternative; but Motocaddy lithium lasts five times longer, is a fraction of the weight and recharges much faster. For trolley power, it pays to play the long game.

TaylorMade SLDR

With the introduction of TaylorMade’s SLDR Mini driver and SLDR S family, as well as a white version of the original SLDR driver, there are more options for us to work with. The 260cc Mini features a low-forward centre of gravity which means you may well benefit from playing a higher loft.
